February 08, 2010
Wednesday, February 3, the Chetopa chapter of FCCLA competed at the District level in STAR Events. Their advisor, Ms. Leah Lawrence informed us that STAR Events (Students Taking Action with Recognition) are competitive events in which members are recognized for proficiency and achievement in chapter and individual projects, leadership skills, and career preparation. STAR Events offer individual skill development and application of learning through the following activities:
cooperative - teams work to accomplish specific goals
individualized - an individual member works alone to accomplish specific goals
competitive - individual or team performance measured by an established set of criteria.
Three students from Chetopa High school competed in the Chapter Service Project Display competition. Chapter Service Project Display is a team event that recognizes chapters that develop and implement an in-depth service project that makes a worthwhile contribution to families, schools, and communities. Students must use Family and Consumer Sciences content and skills to address and take action on a community need. Participants must prepare a display and an oral presentation.
Our team consisting of students Caitlyn, Kristy, and Ashley qualified for State in the Chapter Service Project Display competition! Congratulations girls!
FOLLOW UP (April 21, 2010) from FCCLA Advisor Leah Lawrence:
A big CONGRATULATIONS goes out to Kristy, Caitlyn, and Ashley for receiving a SILVER medal at STATE STAR EVENTS! These girls did a great job and I couldn't be more proud.
They had 7 groups competing in their category. Two teams were selected to move onto Nationals........ so you can imagine that they were a little disappointed that they came in second. Nonetheless, they still did a great job and can not wait until state next YEAR!
