Greetings from the Principal
For more than a century and a half, education has been a priority in St. Paul, KS. The first settlement on these grounds, even prior to statehood, was for the purpose of educating the original inhabitants at the Osage Mission, founded by the Jesuits and the Sisters of Loretto. That long tradition still lives in our current schools, thanks to a community that supports hard work and high expectations.
From the frame buildings that once adorned this landscape, to the
stone and masonry buildings, to the newly erected high school,
student growth in the intellectual, social, physical, and emotional
realm have always been the priority. We are blessed to have strong,
traditional families that care about this growth and support this
most important task.
It is our goal to bring children in at the kindergarten level and
to send young adults out into the world upon graduation, capable of
making positive decisions that lead to life-long learning and
societal leadership. As a small school, we are able to put students
in leadership roles and can easily monitor individual student
growth, while offering a high quality curriculum delivered by a
dedicated professional staff.
St. Paul schools have been awarded several “Standard of Excellence”
citations by the Kansas State Department of Education. These awards
are based on exemplary test scores on the Kansas Assessment in
Math, Reading and Writing. Our Spring 2009, assessment scores
garnered eighteen Standard of Excellence certificates. In the Fall
of 2009, St. Paul Middle School was selected as the recipient of
the prestigious Challenge Award based on the 7th grade reading
assessment scores. We are committed to excellence!
St. Paul, KS is a bedroom community for the larger cities of
Pittsburg, Parsons and Chanute, nestled on the banks of the Neosho
River. It truly is a beautiful town with much to offer. Our patrons
fill our bleachers and the gymnasium to watch quality athletic
teams as well as student programs such as the annual Veterans Day
performance and Winter and Spring concerts.
The voters of USD 505 recently approved a bond issue that provided
a state of the art high school with a new gymnasium, media center,
music and art room. Six new classrooms, including a science lab as
well as two locker rooms and two FEMA approved tornado shelters
were constructed. A new kitchen will be completed in the Spring of
2010. Within the bond issue, $650,000 was set aside for technology.
All of our classrooms are equipped with high-speed internet,
SmartBoards, and all high school students have their own laptop
computers. We indeed are blessed.
On behalf of St. Paul Schools, I would like invite you to visit our
campus to see our newly updated facilities and meet our dedicated
staff. We are proud of the tradition set many years ago and look
forward to many years of quality education at St. Paul
Schools.
Mark LaTurner, K-12 Principal
