I.   St. Paul , USD#505, St. Paul HIGH SCHOOL, GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS...

The minimum requirements for graduation are twenty-fIVE (25) units and will include the following:

     Four (4) units of Language Arts. 

     Three (3) units of social sciences.  This shall include one unit each of American history and of American government plus one social science elective.

     Two (2) units of science, one of which must be a lab science.

     Three (3) units of mathematics.

     One (1) unit of health/physical education.

     One (1) unit of computer technology.

      One (1) unit of Personal Finance or Introduction to Business

     Eleven (11) units of electives.

 

II.   REGENTS QUALIFIED ADMISSIONS PRE-COLLEGE CURRICULUM...

Under the provisions of the 1996 House Bill Number 2668, a graduate of an accredited Kansas high school is entitled to admission to a State Board of Regents’ Institution (Emporia State, Fort Hays State, Kansas University, Kansas State, Pittsburgh State, Wichita State) if the student has completed the pre-college curriculum prescribed by the State Board of Regents (and listed herein) with a minimum grade point average of 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale).  The law also specifies that a graduate is eligible for admission if s/he has a composite ACT score of not less than 21 or ranks in the top third of his/her high school class upon completion of seven or eight semesters of study.  This law applies to students who graduate in 2001 or later.  SEE: the chart on page 3.

                 Four (4) units of English, at least one per year

           Three (3) units of mathematics (Algebra I, Algebra II, and geometry)

           Three (3) units of social sciences

           Three (3) units of natural sciences (one unit must be chemistry or physics)

           One (1) unit in the field of computer technology

           Recommended, but not required: two units of a foreign language and one unit in fine or performing arts.

 

 

 

 

 

III.  PRE-COLLEGE CURRICULUM REQUIREMENTS FOR STATE SCHOLARSHIP

      APPLICANTS...

As a Kansas high school graduate, you may be eligible for state-sponsored scholarship programs.  To be eligible for one of these scholarships, you must complete all the required courses for the pre-college curriculum plus an additional three units, as follows:

           Math: one additional unit of advanced math (total of four units required)

           Foreign language: two units of one foreign language

           Natural science: three units are required but they must be biology, chemistry, and physics.

 

 

IV.  NCAA ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS...

Students wishing to meet NCAA eligibility requirements should contact the principal for the requirements to Division I and Division II schools.

VI.  MISCELLANEOUS NOTES...

     A student at St. Paul High School is required to carry seven units per semester.

     Independent courses may be arranged for individual students with the approvals of the principal and the instructor.  St. Paul High School is committed to meeting the needs of its students.

     Not all classes described in this catalog will be offered every year.  Other classes may be modified to fit the schedule.

VII.  COURSE DESCRIPTION CATALOG CONTENTS...

Sections of this catalog include General Education / College Preparatory and Vocational Education.  In each of these sections, each department is listed alphabetically as is each class within each department.

Kansas Regents Qualified Admissions Curriculum

Students must meet one of the following requirements to qualify for admission to any of the six (Emporia State, Fort Hays State, Kansas State, Pittsburg State, University of Kansas, Wichita State)  Kansas Regents universities:

           Achieve an ACT composite score of 21 or above; or

           Rank in the top one-third of your high school’s graduation class; or

           Complete the Qualified Admissions Curriculum with at least a 2.0 grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale.

 

One of the ways you can meet university admission requirements is to successfully complete the Qualified Admissions Curriculum as outlined by the Kansas Board of Regents. You must complete the courses with at least a 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. This is a “C” average.

 

Also, as a Kansas high school graduate, you may be eligible to be considered for one of the three state-sponsored scholarship programs:

     Description: Students will be exposed to a variety of ceramic techniques, including coli, slab, and pinch method.

 

Course Title: Design (Art Class)

     Description: This is a multi-media class, using the elements and principles of design as a guide toward making artwork more commercial in appearance.

     Description: Students use a variety of dry media:  Pencil, colored pencil, marker, chalk, and charcoal.  They will be exposed to the elements of art.

 

Course Title: Painting (Art Class)

     Description: Students will use a variety of wet media, including acrylic, watercolor, tempera, and oil paint.

 

Course Title: Printmaking (Art Class)

     Description: Students will be exposed to the four main types of printmaking: relief, intaglio, lithography, and serigraphy.

 

Course Title: Sculpture (Art Class)

     Course length: One year

     Description: Students will use a variety of media including clay, plaster, balsa foam, and various other 3D media.

 

Course Title: Instrumental Music (Band)

     Course length: One year, M-F

     Course Credit: 1 (May be repeated for credit.)

     Grade Level Recommendation: 7-12

     Prerequisite: None

     Requirement or Elective: Elective

     Description: Participation in band teaches the student the fundamentals of music reading, introduces the student to a variety of music styles, encourages team work, and promotes self-discipline.  The student will learn to demonstrate ensemble skills, music techniques, listening skills, and artistry.  Band is a performance class.  Performances include (but are not limited to): pep band for home athletic events; pep rallies; concerts; league clinic; and KSHSAA regional and state music festival.  Band members are encouraged (but not required) to perform as individuals or as members of small ensembles for competitive festivals.  Band director may require a certain code of dress for performance. Students who previously have exited the instrumental music program are encouraged to resume their musical studies. It is recommended for students to stay with the same instrument, but they may, with permission of teacher, learn a new instrument. May be repeated for credit.

 

Course Title: Vocal Music (Mixed Choir)

     Course length: One year

     Course Credit: 1 (May be repeated for credit.)

     Description: The Choir works to learn how to read music better, learning to read “parts” and to harmonize, is introduced to a variety of music styles from classical and sacred to popular, and is encouraged to work as a team toward a common goal.  Vocal music is a performance group which will present at a variety of concerts, festivals, and community functions.  Members of the choir are encouraged to, but are not required, to perform as individuals or as members of small ensembles for public performance and/or competitive festivals.  The Choir director may require a certain code of dress for performances.

Course Title: Spanish I

     Course length: One year, M-F

     Description: Spanish I introduces the students to the fundamental sounds, vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure of the Spanish language..  Students are able to converse with the instructor at a primary Spanish level.

 

Course Title: Spanish II

     Course length: One year, M-F

     Course Credit: 1

     Grade Level Recommendation: 10-12

     Prerequisite: Spanish I

     Description: Spanish II continues the instruction of Spanish I, using advanced workbooks, textbooks, and electronic media.  In addition to vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure, Spanish II involves the student in extended reading, writing, and interpretations in Spanish.  Students use Spanish classroom expressions and situational activities to simulate real life Spanish conversations. 

 

 DEPARTMENT: HEALTH, PHYSICAL EDUCATION, RECREATION                 

 

Course Title: Driver’s Education

     Course length: As prescribed by law

     Course Credit: 1/2

     Prerequisite: High school students aged 14 or older; parental permission

     Requirement or Elective: Elective

     Special Note:   Driver’s Education is taken outside regular school hours during the summer until the course requirements are completed.

     Description: Driver’s Education is open to any high school student who is 14 years of age or older.  The District and the State of Kansas set the requirements for completion of this class.  It is designed to introduce basic driving skills. Students will complete the prescribed course of study which includes the study and practice of driving skills, specific driving situations, and defensive driving strategies. At the successful completion of the class, the student may apply for a license (restricted license for those aged 15; Class C license for those aged 16 or older).  This is a summer course.

 

 

Course Title: Health

     Course length: One-half year

     Course Credit: 1/2

     Prerequisite: None

     Requirement or Elective: Requirement

     Description: Health is normally a freshmen level course offered in conjunction with physical education.  One-half credit of health is required by the District and State for graduation.  Health introduces the student to many health-related topics which may include: the basics of nutrition, diet and exercise, bodily functions, the skeletal system, the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system, drug and alcohol awareness, stress management, diseases and disorders, human sexuality, AIDS awareness, first aid, and CPR training.

 

 

 

Course Title: Physical Education

     Course length: One-half year

     Course Credit: 1/2

     Prerequisite: None

     Equipment Requirements: Athletic clothing and “gym” shoes

     Requirement or Elective: Requirement

                 Description: Physical education is offered in conjunction with health.  Physical education teaches the student how to exercise properly, provides the student with life-long fitness capabilities, and instructs the student in ways to fight obesity and coronary disease.  Some of the activities introduced in physical education may include: weight training, bike riding, archery, badminton, bowling, fishing, golf, team sports, dance, aerobics, and more.

 

 

Course Title:  Lifetime Fitness

                 Course length:  Full year

                 Course Credit:  1

                 Grade Level Recommendation:  10-12

                 Prerequisite:  None

                 Equipment Requirements: Athletic clothing and “gym” shoes

                 Requirement or Elective:  Elective

                 Description:  An introduction to the benefits of exercise.  Weights, plyometrics, and stretching techniques are used to meet goals.  There is a stress on the benefits of exercise for a lifetime.  May not be repeated for credit.

 

 

 

 

 

DEPARTMENT: INDEPENDENT STUDIES

 

A student wanting or needing a course which is not on the class schedule may request the course be offered as an independent study.  Enrollment in an independent study course will be contingent upon one or more of the following: (1) available teaching staff certified in the area; (2) time allowances; (3) an acceptable syllabus of the course which would include goals and objectives, minimum competency standards, and scope and sequence; and (4) permission from parent and administration.  Independent studies may be under the jurisdiction of an on-staff teacher or through distance-learning offerings.

                 Description: The student will complete individualized assignments in grammar, usage, mechanics, and composition determined by pretests.  The student will complete a vocabulary lesson in Vocabulary Workshop each week.  The student will read four novels and prepare a critique for each.  The student will choose the novels, and the teacher will approve them.  The student will study literary terms and will apply that knowledge while reading short stories, poetry, plays, and nonfiction.  The student will develop special projects for The Odyssey, Romeo and Juliet, and Great Expectations.

 

 

Course Title: English II

                 Course length: One year, M-F

                 Course Credit: 1

                 Grade Level Recommendation: 10

                 Prerequisite: English I

                 Requirement or Elective: Requirement

                 Description: he student will complete individualized assignments in grammar, usage, mechanics, and composition determined by pretests. The student will read four novels and prepare a critique for each. The student will read selected novels, and complete the related activities to accompany selected readings.  The student will study literary terms and will apply that knowledge while reading short stories, poetry, plays, and nonfiction.  The student will study the history of drama from Ancient Greece (Antigone) to medieval Arthurian legends to Shakespeare (Julius Caesar) to the modern stage (I Never Sang for My Father).  Each student will develop special projects for the literary units.
